Whiteman's

117 min.

2019

Self-described coffee baron, four-time divorcee, and new-media auteur, Steve Whiteman, decides to start a coffee chain in Cambodia after a 'midlife epiphany' (his words). Steve gets to know his fellow Phnom Penh expats if nothing of the personal repression he stuffs down with strong coffee, Goldfish crackers, and a big fat dose of toxic masculinity (not to mention a hearty helping of neocolonialism). Irony is the name of the game in this experimental satire, stoner comedy, and essay film. Picture something like Man Bites Dog by way of Chris Marker, Dušan Makavejev, and Cheech and Chong.

The project showcases my affection for associative editing, mixed-media collages, and, as should be clear from this description... lists. Includes family home movies, family travelogue footage, archival ephemera, Spiderman cartoons, classical music, and truckloads of high jinks.

I assume the role of Steve in the film, along with several other local luminaries.
